If you don’t feel good about who you are, then you’ll have a difficult time connecting with others.
That’s why today, we’re going to talk about how to like yourself more.
I’m about to share with you the exact same process that I’ve used to figure out how to be less self-conscious around people.
What You'll Learn In This Post
1. Question Your Limiting Beliefs
You get exactly what you think about the most.
That’s why you have to be mindful of what you focus on.
If you want to figure out how to like yourself, you have to get good at questioning your limiting beliefs.
Don’t just believe everything that your mind tells you right away.
Check out this video if you want to be able to stop overanalyzing social interactions.
Whenever you feel bad, that’s a sign that you need to analyze whatever you’re thinking about.
Once you’re aware of the negative stories you’re telling yourself, you’ll be able to reframe them.
It’s your mind anyway, you can fill it with anything that you want.
You might as well choose thoughts that make you feel good and support your goals.
The better you are at doing this, the faster you’ll improve the way you see yourself.
2. Avoid Comparing Yourself To Others
It’s easy to feel inadequate when you measure yourself against everybody else.
But the truth is, we all have things that we’re naturally better at compared to others.
For example, if you identify as an introvert, then you’re probably a good listener, a deep thinker, and also very creative.
On the other hand, extroverts find it hard to work alone, get bored easily, and have poor listening skills.
From Shy To Social
Discover proven steps to approach and talk to anybody no matter how shy you are.
As the saying goes, “Whatever you appreciate, appreciates.”
Nobody is perfect and we all have our shortcomings.
But you get to decide where you put your attention to.
That’s why you need to make a conscious effort to always think of what’s good about you.
When you do, you’ll realize that you actually have a lot to offer in any relationship.
Over time, you’ll start to see yourself as a high-value person.
As a result, you’ll be less intimidated interacting with others.
If you want to know how to like yourself, keep focusing on your positive traits.
The more you do, the more comfortable you’ll feel in your own skin.
3. Practice Self-Compassion
Most people who struggle socially speak to themselves in a very demeaning way.
They have such negative self-talk that’s why they don’t feel good about who they are.
If you’re wondering how to like yourself, avoid doing this at all costs.
Practice self-compassion whenever you mess something up.
For example, let’s say you’re hanging out with a friend.
You tried making a witty remark but he didn’t really get it.
As a result, you felt embarrassed and you’re beating yourself up about it.
For some people, they take that experience so personally.
As a result, they act more timid the next time they’re around others.
That’s why you need to practice self-compassion whenever you make a mistake.
Remind yourself that you did the best you could with what you know at that moment.
If you knew better, you would’ve done things differently right?
My advice is for you to view embarrassing experiences as an opportunity to learn and grow from.
By doing so, you’ll be a lot more likely to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone.
You’ll figure out how to put yourself out there instead of always playing it safe.
As a result, you’re going to have more fulfilling experiences instead of having lots of regrets.
4. Review Your Goals
It’s hard to feel inspired if you have nothing to work towards.
If you want to know how to like yourself, take the time to review your goals.
Create a vision for your life by asking yourself what your perfect day would look like.
What would you do?
Where would you live?
Who would you spend time with?
Having answers to these questions will give your life more meaning and purpose.
Personally, I like to go over my personal and professional goals on a regular basis.
That’s why I’m jumping out of bed every morning because I have something exciting to wake up to.
From what I’ve noticed, happy people are always working on something that interests them.
If you want greater fulfillment in your life, define a worthwhile goal and take massive action towards it.
5. Adopt A Gratitude Practice
Most people who struggle socially tend to make a big deal out of small things.
They’re always focused on the worst-case scenario which makes them feel bad.
If you want to learn how to like yourself, you need to shift your focus.
Rather than complaining, I invite you to look for things to be thankful for.
By doing so, you’ll realize that your life is never as bad as you make it out to be.
If you take an objective look at your situation, you’ll notice that there are a lot of good things that are going well for you.
To help you get started and build positive momentum, just think of something small to be thankful for.
Also, take a moment to pause until you feel whatever it is that you’re appreciating.
You know you’re doing it right when you notice your emotions change for the better.
The more you focus on all the good things that are happening in your life, the more of them you’re going to get.
If you’re wondering how to get out of a funk and get motivated, this is one of the best ways to do it.
6. Get Out Of Your Head
A lot of people who are shy and introverted tend to overanalyze everything.
They’re always so worried about the opinions of others that’s why they often feel nervous.
The truth is, it’ll be hard to come across as someone charismatic if you’re not in the moment.
If you want to know how to like yourself, you need to control the way you think.
From my experience, the best way to become more present is to start a meditation practice.
Every morning, I recommend you have a quiet moment to be with yourself.
Close your eyes and focus on your breathing for a few minutes.
And then, pay attention to your thoughts without any judgment.
Just watch them come and go without feeling the need to react to any of them.
When you do this long enough, you’ll be able to slow down your mind and relax your body.
You’ll experience less anxiety and be able to think more clearly.
This will help you feel at ease in social situations and you’ll act more like yourself.
7. Take Care Of Your Health
Improving your physical fitness is one of the confidence-building exercises that I know.
Besides the obvious health benefits, it’s what it does to your self-image that makes a huge difference.
If you want to figure out how to like yourself, make an effort to prioritize your health.
To help you get started, just pick a physical activity that you enjoy.
Also, eat mostly whole foods and get enough sleep every single day.
Remember, you are your best asset so make sure you take care of yourself.
Feeling good physically will help you become more clear-minded.
This leads to better judgment which influences the actions you take and the outcomes that you get.
8. Practice Being Uncomfortable
The fear of rejection holds most people back from putting themselves out there.
Getting turned down hurts because it triggers the same part of our brain when we experience physical pain.
That’s why most of us try to avoid it at all costs.
But if you keep playing it safe, imagine what kind of life you’re going to have?
I can assure you that you’ll constantly experience boredom and loneliness.
That’s why you need to step outside of your comfort zone and take more risks.
Check out this video if you want to have a social life and when you have no friends.
For example, to help me overcome my shyness when I was younger, I got a job as a server in a busy restaurant.
By doing that, it forced me to talk to people every single day.
I had to figure out how to be more outgoing very quickly because my tips were dependent on how likeable I was.
Over time, this experience helped me become socially adept.
These days, I feel a lot more relaxed when I interact with people.
As a result, I’m able to build rapport with anybody very quickly.
That being said, if you want to know how to like yourself, keep doing things that make you feel uncomfortable.
The more challenges you overcome, the more courageous you’re going to be.
You’ll realize that you’re capable of getting what you want if you set your mind to it.
As a result, you’ll put yourself out there more because you’re less afraid of rejection.
9. Communicate Your Needs
From what I’ve noticed, people with low self-worth feel like they don’t deserve to get what they want.
They usually assume that they’re bothering others so they never say anything.
Tired Of Feeling Lonely?
If you’re struggling socially and would like some help, let’s connect.
If you’re wondering how to like yourself, you have to stop feeling guilty all the time.
Your needs matter so make sure you communicate them to those around you.
This is especially true if you know what you’re asking for is totally valid.
Remember, people can’t read your mind.
That’s why you need to know how to express yourself verbally.
Otherwise, how else are they supposed to know?
If you’re not used to asking for what you want, start with small requests first.
That way, you’ll get some quick wins which will make you feel more encouraged.
10. Evaluate Your Relationships
Remember, you become the average of those you spend the most time with.
That’s why you have to be mindful of the company you keep.
If you want to figure out how to like yourself, you need to get rid of toxic people in your life.
That’s why you have to consistently evaluate your relationships.
Check out this podcast interview with Cam Adair, Founder of Game Quitters where he talks about how to meet new friends.
Sometimes, that means minimizing contact with certain individuals.
In some cases, maybe even cutting ties with connections that no longer serve you.
At the end of the day, there are billions of people in the world.
You don’t need to settle for mediocre relationships.
You never have to compromise what’s important to you just to be accepted by others.
That’s why you need to learn how to be more socially confident.
By doing so, you’ll be able to find more people who celebrate you and encourage your growth.
