Not having any close relationships in your life can feel very isolating.
That’s why today, we’re going to talk about specific things to do when you have no friends.
I’m about to share with you the exact same process that I’ve used to figure out how to build a social circle from scratch.
What You'll Learn In This Post
1. Overcome Approach Anxiety
If you’re wondering how to have a social life, there’s a very important skill that you need to develop.
Arguably, this is one of the best things to do when you have no friends.
Once you figure this out, you’ll be able to consistently put yourself out there and create quality connections.
From Shy To Social
Discover proven steps to approach and talk to anybody no matter how shy you are.
In order to grow your network quickly, you have to get good at approaching people.
Unfortunately, those who struggle socially are too afraid to initiate interactions with complete strangers.
At the end of the day, nothing will happen if you don’t take risks and make the first move, right?
If you don’t overcome your approach anxiety, then you’ll always miss out on opportunities to meet like-minded people.
You’ll catch yourself sitting on the sidelines unable to fully participate.
That’s why you have to develop your courage and step outside of your comfort zone.
The better you are at interacting with people that you don’t know, the more doors will open up for you.
This will help you build a social circle filled with individuals that you’re excited to spend time with.
2. Improve Your Conversation Skills
You’ll have a hard time connecting with anybody if you can’t hold a conversation.
You’ll make people feel uncomfortable which may cause them to not want to spend time with you.
In order to build rapport with others, you have to know how to express yourself verbally.
That way, you’ll prevent awkward silences during your interactions.
Check out this interview with Patrick King, Founder of Patrick King Consulting, where he talks about how to become an engaging conversationalist.
The best way to do this is to take the time to come up with things to say.
Doing so will help you improve your conversation skills.
If you think about it, the same topics tend to come up in conversation over and over again anyway.
That being said, I encourage you to think of interesting ways to discuss different areas of your life.
The more stories you put together, the easier it’ll be for you to figure out how to never run out of things to say.
You’ll feel a lot more comfortable interacting with others when you know what to talk about and how to respond.
3. Meet People Online
Technology has changed the way we meet people.
Because of how often we use social media these days, a lot of people feel more comfortable interacting with strangers online.
Personally, I’ve met a lot of amazing individuals from the internet.
Those connections have translated to incredible opportunities both personally and professionally.
If you’re wondering how to meet friends with similar interests online, it’s actually quite simple.
You just have to remember that the same rules apply to making offline connections.
All you have to do is to identify what kind of people you want to meet.
Once you have that sorted out, figure out which corner of the web they hang out.
Whichever platform you choose, make sure your profile is an accurate representation of you.
Give off the right impression by having recent and high-quality photos.
Do your best to communicate your personality through the types of content that you put out there.
And then, you reach out to others by commenting on something specific about their profile and their posts as well.
Once you have a few exchanges, see if they’d be open to hopping on a video call.
If you feel like both of you have good rapport, then schedule time to meet up in person.
4. Become A Regular
If you want to know how to build a social life from nothing, why not connect with people that you see in your daily routine?
Becoming a regular at a handful of places is one of the best things to do when you have no friends.
Check out this video if you want to become talkative and social.
To give you an example from my own life, I tend to go to the same coffee shops, fitness centers, and restaurants.
Because I’m there so much, I eventually got to know the staff and all the other regulars.
After seeing them enough times, we ended up having casual conversations.
Eventually, we started hanging out and doing fun activities together.
In fact, this is how I learned how to make friends in a new city.
To make this work for you, all you have to do is to pick a few spots that you like.
Integrate yourself into those places and be part of the community.
Imagine how easy it is to interact with people that you run into on a regular basis?
Doing this is such an easy way to grow your network without putting in more time and effort.
5. Look For Volunteering Opportunities
From my experience, volunteering is one of the best things to do when you have no friends.
You’ll meet some of the kindest and most generous people out there when you do this.
To help you get started, identify the things that are important to you.
And then choose events, groups, and causes that align with them.
To give you an example for my own life, I love anything that has to do with business, spirituality, and personal development.
That’s why I volunteer my time to help out organizations in my city around those topics.
Also, if you have a particular skill that you’re good at, see if you can teach that somewhere.
Doing so is such a great way to share your expertise with others and meet like-minded people at the same time.
6. Look More Approachable
The thing is, you can be the smartest and most interesting person out there.
But, if you don’t look like it, then who’s going to know?
Whether you like it or not, your looks really do matter.
We all make snap judgments about people right away based on what we see.
That’s why you have to take your appearance seriously and learn how to be approachable.
Check out this video if you want to become socially attractive without saying anything.
To help you get started, put some effort into the way you dress.
Make sure your clothes are clean, up-to-date, and well-fitting.
Remember to groom yourself properly as well.
Also, make sure you have an open body language when you interact with someone.
Whatever you do, avoid crossing your arms or legs.
Stand up straight, maintain proper eye contact, and have a genuine smile on your face.
By doing all these things, you’ll look like someone worth getting to know.
People will assume positive things about you and they’ll take what you have to say more seriously.
7. Find A Social Hobby
If you have nothing else going on for you other than your job, then something needs to change.
You can’t just go to work, go home and do nothing else.
Not only will this make your life boring, you also won’t have anything to discuss with others.
Tired Of Feeling Lonely?
If you’re struggling socially and would like some help, let’s connect.
If you’re looking for things to do when you have no friends, you need to take up a new hobby.
Ideally, you’ll pick something with a built-in social component to it.
That way, you get to learn a new skill while meeting people at the same time.
Remember, mutual interest is the foundation of every great relationship.
That’s why you should do more things that you enjoy and connect with people along the way.
As you can see, learning how to meet like-minded friends doesn’t have to be so hard.
You just have to be more intentional with how you go about it.
8. Avoid Isolating Yourself
If you identify as an introvert, then you prefer your own company to others.
You also like to recharge by spending time alone.
And that’s totally cool.
But if you currently have no social life, then you need to limit activities that isolate you for too long.
Learning how to make friends as an introvert is still going to be a number’s game.
For now, cut back on any activities that don’t support your social goals.
Instead of watching television or playing video games, keep an open mind and accept valid invitations from others.
Remember, nothing will happen if you don’t leave your house.
The more you go out, the more opportunities you have to connect with others.
If you’re wondering how to make friends when you are socially awkward, this is one of the best ways to do it.
9. Get Out Of Your Head
Those who struggle socially have a tendency to think that people notice them more than they do.
It’s easy to feel nervous when you think that everyone is looking at you.
This will cause you to stifle your personality to avoid being criticized by others.
Not to mention, you’ll have a tough time building rapport with anybody if you just keep to yourself.
That being said, one of the best things to do when you have no friends is to get out of your head.
You have to realize that nobody is paying attention to you as much as you might assume.
Everyone is too focused on themselves the same way that you are as well.
That’s why you have to be able to manage your expectations.
And when you do, you’ll be able to feel more at ease in any social situation.
You’ll be less self-conscious around people and you’ll be able to show your true personality more.
10. Don’t Take Anything Personally
Let me ask you a question.
Do you like every person that you talk to?
You don’t right?
So what makes you think that everyone will like you as well?
If you want to know how to build a social life from nothing, you have to learn how to not take things personally.
The reality is, you just have no clue what’s going on in people’s lives when you interact with them.
Personally, I’m usually a very outgoing person.
But, I’m not in a social mood if I’m not feeling all that great.
The next time someone does turn you down, remind yourself that it’s not about you.
That’s why you should always be empathetic.
It’s your mind anyway, you can believe anything that you want.
Instead of making things about you, put yourself in other people’s situations.
Try to see where they’re coming from and do your best to tell yourself more empowering stories.
The better you are at doing this, the less you’ll be afraid of rejection.
You’ll put yourself out there more which will help you expand your network much faster.
